    It is not difficult to imagine that parallel signs are more difficult to see than are perpendicular signs, as they’re not jumping out in front of you like the perpendicular signs do. However, imagination is worth only so much, so the USSC (United States Sign Council) set out to make scientific formulas and equations that would give us a mathematical model to work with. pavement sign

    It is often virtually impossible to see some signs because of their orientation, especially at longer distances, at higher speeds, and with multiple lanes of traffic. Perpendicular signs can also block visibility of parallel signs or banners. There is also a shortening and angular distortion that occurs as you approach a parallel sign, and the sign will disappear more quickly once you do make visual contact.

    There are three things that place a parallel sign at a disadvantage to perpendicular signs. First, because of the angle, they’re more difficult to read as the message is distorted from the front of the sign to the furthest distance the sign is from your viewing position. Second, the sign disappears into the driver’s peripheral vision more quickly because the viewing angle is above 30 degrees, so viewing time is compressed. Third, if the sign is set back off the street like many parallel signs are, they are significantly outside the driver’s cone of vision. When this is the case, the driver has to take quick, fraction-of-a-second sideways glances to get a glimpse of the sign. Often a driver cannot find the sign at all.     In the USSC study, Real World On-Premise Sign Visibility, people were asked to drive through a shopping mall parking lot and locate specific signs. Virtually all perpendicular signs were located, but about 30 percent of all parallel signs were missed completely, even though they averaged two to three times larger than the perpendicular signs. The drivers were looking for all the specified signs, but missed nearly a third of the parallel signs!

    Because of a parallel sign’s propensity for being overlooked, we cannot use the equations that we used for perpendicular signs to create letter height for parallel signs as they will not give the driver adequate time to see the signs. For a sign to be seen, the viewer must have a certain amount of time to react once he or she has seen the sign (VRT), and the VRT, combined with the speed at which the driver is travelling, tells us the approximate VRD (viewer reaction distance). And that we can calculate the size of sign needed using the LI, or legibility index.

    All that info is out the window, so to speak, when we are forced to use a parallel sign for our business. The hope is that you can utilize both, but there are some times and places where this option is simply not available. With parallel signs, what is more important is line of sight angle as well as the ability to view the sign in successive quick glances.

    Research has determined that the angle of this viewing should be no less than 30 degrees from the driver’s line of sight. This, with the number of lanes on the street or highway and the sign’s distance from the curb, determines the Maximum Available Legibility Distance (MALD). This is much different though, than the VRD of a perpendicular sign in that the most that one can expect from the driver is a few very quick glances without dramatically increasing the possibility of an accident.

    The same research determined also that the size of the letters would need to be increased by a factor of three, then leveled off, not improving much as the size increased beyond three. Therefore, what was, on the Legibility Index (LI) as a 30 will now be a 10, and to get the same reading as a 30, it will be 30 x 3 = 90. So, then, a perpendicular sign with 17″ letters at 500′ away would need to have 50″ letters at 500′ if the sign’s orientation were parallel.

    The history of the North Toronto neighbourhood goes back to 1890. This is when it was first incorporated, and it was formed by Davisville Village, Eglinton Village, and Bedford Park Village all joining together.     Depending on your personal interests, you may like a specific section of the neighbourhood. Be sure to keep note of which area appeals to you most. One of North Toronto’s main attractions is an island green space located right in the centre of the neighbourhood! It’s actually in the Wanless Park area, but offers the entire neighbourhood a great social experience. The island features: five tennis courts, one basketball court, one baseball diamond, a tots’ playground, and a wading pool. The island also offers: certified lessons, social events, clubs, teams, and tournaments for adults and juniors! The neighbourhood Community Centre provides residence with a public gym, and an indoor pool. The Community Centre is located in the Bedford Park section of the neighbourhood. The North Toronto subway station will take you to anywhere you want to be in Toronto. It is convenient to all residence in the North Toronto neighbourhood, and it takes approximately 20 minutes to get to downtown Toronto.

    Glitter polishes are the type of polishes that just spell glamour. They come in different textures and patterns. Some polishes contain finely milled glitters and some contain chunkier ones. The only downside of glitter is that it is really difficult to remove.

    2. Base Coat

    A base coat is essential in preparing the nails for color. It protects them from discoloration that is brought about by bold colored polishes. A base coat often comes as a colorless finish. You can get a base coat that contains nail strengthening elements that would help keep your nails strong.

    3. Top Coat

    A top coat is what you put on top of your colored polish. It helps prevent nails from chipping and it also adds additional shine on your nails.

    4. Quick Drying

    If you don’t want to spend so much time painting your nails and waiting for them to dry between layers, a quick drying polish is the right choice for you. It is still recommended to allow at least 15 minutes of drying time, in order to avoid any annoying nicks and dents. Remember that the thinner you apply your polish, the faster it dries.

    Students will plan and execute a field study in which they will collect sensory data using a data collection protocol they have previously created.

    Context for Use fieldap

    Now that students have some experience developing data collection protocols, this part of the unit guides students through the process of developing and executing a plan for the collection of field data aimed at exploring a specific guiding question. Students will need to record data that can be analyzed and displayed, and record field conditions. The sensory data collected will be scents or sounds because they are easily collected but challenging to characterize, they move through the environment subject to local conditions much like contaminants do (and can be indicators of contamination), and they can have a direct and immediate impact on a local population.

    Researchers (such as geoscientists) need to have a plan before going into the field. The plan ensures that the necessary equipment and personnel are available and that relevant data is collected and recorded. As with the data collection protocols, the field investigation plan will help to ensure that fieldwork occurs in a systematic manner and that information gathered is scientifically valid. Environmental fieldwork typically crosses disciplinary and sub-disciplinary boundaries, and a successful field investigation plan will describe and assign specific roles to group members in consideration of abilities.

    Prior to this unit, students will:

    • be familiar with the difference between qualitative and quantitative data (Unit 1 of this module)
    • be familiar with objective and subjective observations (Unit 1 and Unit 2 of this module)
    • be familiar with collecting and recording data (Unit 2 of this module)
    • be familiar with using maps to determine and record their location
    • have completed a unit in which they develop a sensory data collection protocol (Part 1 of this unit)

    In this unit, students will prepare a base map on which to record their locations. Map use and development are also topics in Units 4 and 5 in this module. Students should be familiar with maps and their use; however, cartography is not a topic covered in detail in this module. The selection and preparation of the base map will depend on prior instruction and experience, and appropriate base maps will vary from class to class. Some options for base maps are discussed in the Teaching Notes and Tips section below. In addition, sources of more information on mapmaking are provided in the References and Resources section below.

    If students are using a GPS device to record their locations, they will need to be familiar with the operation of that equipment.

    In addition to collecting sensory data, students will need to observe and keep a record of their physical surroundings. It is especially important that they keep a record of geophysical and biological systems conditions (inputs) that will impact the movement of smells and sounds and, ultimately, the reception of the sensory outputs. The environmental conditions (systems inputs) include wind speed and direction, air temperature, surface topography, and vegetation. An accurate record of these conditions will be necessary when analyzing the data in order to determine the source(s) as well as the receptors likely to be impacted. Because the inputs can vary significantly from day to day, this record will also be important for comparison with the results of other field data collected.

    Fieldwork requires time outside of class, ideally over a weekend to allow students some flexibility for meeting times based on their schedules and the weather.

    Within one to two weeks of completing this unit, students will prepare maps to display the collected data and characterize the study area and write a short reflection paper that will include a discussion of field conditions and data collection methods (Unit 5 of this module). Students may also use the collected data to compare and contrast field locations, analyze how scents and sounds move through the environment and trace them to their sources, and analyze the potential impact of scents and sounds on the people that live within the area of investigation.

    Description and Teaching Materials


    Students will need writing materials and their natural senses (nose, ears). It is possible that some students may have sensory limitations; such limitations should be incorporated into the discussion and the development of the field investigation plan.

    To facilitate the gallery walk, instructors may wish to provide either large sheets of paper and tape, or sheets from self-stick wall pads of paper.

    It is helpful to provide students with access to aerial imagery of the field area from which they will develop their own maps (Google Maps, MapQuest, Yahoo Maps, and Google Earth are all good options). Students may use GPS units or their cell phones to record their locations; if so, they will need to be familiar with the operation of the equipment. Some groups may choose to collect sound data using a freely available smart phone app; if so, they will need to have a device that meets the app’s specifications and they will need to develop working knowledge of the app. In addition, they will need to collect data on additional aspects of sounds that cannot be logged by the app. Students will adapt their previously developed data collection protocols (from Part 1 of this unit) for their mapping project.

The food mill strains most cooked foods to a very smooth consistency, although meats can be a problem as they will have a coarser texture. Remember all the tools you need to make baby food are probably already in your kitchen.

    4. You can prepare large amounts of foods at once and freeze them. Take your prepared foods and plop by spoonfuls onto a baking sheet. Freeze the plops right away and then take them off the sheet when they are frozen and put them into plastic bags. You can also freeze the food in plastic “pop out” ice cube trays. Small tupperware jars with lids serve the same purpose and stack easily. Label and date the packages rotate them putting the most recently frozen foods behind the previously frozen ones. Frozen baby foods can be stored for up to two months.

    5. When you take frozen foods out for baby, warm the food in a cup placed in a saucepan of boiling water with a lid on. If you use a microwave to thaw or warm baby food, be sure to stir the food well to avoid hot pockets.

    6. Cereals are typically the first foods given to a baby because they contain lots of iron. You can prepare your own, by running oatmeal through your blender. Fruits are generally given next. Except for raw, mashed banana, you will need to cook all other fruits till they are soft.

    7. Try making your own apple sauce and pear sauce; don’t add any sugar, as these fruits are sweet enough on their own. You can also peel peaches, plums and apricots and boil or steam them.

    2008 National Commercial Casino & Racino Gaming Revenue Analysis

    A Period of Adjustment

    Oops! That giant hissing sound is the gaming balloon that had been growing over the years, slowly losing air. But, it has not been a tide that lowered all ships however, as some emerging and expanding gaming jurisdictions showed strong growth in 2008.

    Overall, the commercial and racetrack casino sectors (excluding Indian gaming), experienced a 3.5 percent decline in gaming revenues for 2008, generating a total of $36.2 billion, down some $800 million from 2007. It was the Racino sector that has tempered this drop, as they showed a gain of almost $1 billion in 2008, thereby bringing the Commercial sector market decline to $1.8 billion, or 6.7 percent. Nevada was the biggest loser in 2008, dropping almost $1.3 billion, more than half of which stemmed from the Las Vegas Strip segment.

    Hunkering Down

    For the most part, casino operators were caught relatively flat-footed by the extent of the 2008 revenue downturn, as it was not until the third and fourth quarters when it really nosedived. Riding the crest of year over year market growth across the country and the availability of ample credit and equity funds, new construction and expansion proliferated in recent years. Today, faced with the realities of declining, or at best stagnant demand, many of these projects are now considered over-leveraged and/or over-sized. As a result many gaming companies are attempting to renegotiate their debt – made more difficult by lower valuations – while also paring down operational costs. The latter has become a very problematic conundrum when dealing with the competition, especially in those jurisdictions that are now vying for market shares with new emerging casino projects in neighboring areas. A topic we discuss more fully in the State by State analysis section of this publication.

    As a result of these conditions the gaming industry landscape is now strewn with impending fatalities. Among the more notable troubled firms are Station Casinos, Empire Resorts, Harrah’s Entertainment, Greektown Holdings, Legends Gaming, Tropicana Entertainment, Herbst Gaming; and the list grows each week.

    “How long will these economic conditions persist, and are we at the bottom yet?” are questions no one appears to be answering yet. What is clear however is that most gaming jurisdictions will have to learn how to deal with a smaller pie.

    This analysis includes only gaming revenues of licensed casinos and pari-mutuel outlets that offer casino games, and not Indian gaming operations, card rooms, or small non-casino type slot locations. The whole article, including revenue tables is available on our web page.

    Input/Output Model

    A key aspect that seems to have arisen from the ashes of this current trend is that many casino projects were just too large to support themselves. The input, in terms of investment dollars, was not proportional to the output, in terms of net profit after debt service, compared to previously achieved results. More and/or bigger is not always better. Seeing the rise in non-gaming revenue at the Las Vegas Strip resorts, gave impetus to the development of more comprehensive amenities in many other jurisdictions. The flaw in this strategy however is that the costs associated with widening market penetration and occasioned-use, are significantly higher than those incurred to attract the base market. จีคลับ

    As daytripper markets become more competitive, casino venues will have to rely more and more on their in-house hotel patrons, and size their properties (and expectations) accordingly. While Steve Wynn started a major trend in creating up-market mega-destinations, there simply was not enough demand on the Strip to warrant the many other similar projects that followed that aimed at the same niche.

    The trick is to strike a happy medium in project configurations; which of course require less of a ‘seat-of-pants’ approach, and one that is more studied. A shameless plug for development consultants like ourselves.

    Other Gaming Activities

    Although there are no published detailed data of American Indian gaming revenues, anecdotal evidence appears to suggest that this segment has been as hard hit as the Commercial sector. The two Connecticut Indian gaming installations report slot revenue of $1.6 billion in 2008, representing a drop of about 7 percent, or almost $114 million, more than doubling the 3.5 percent drop from the year before. This market is apparently still reeling from the ripple-effect of a casino expansion in Rhode Island, and the opening of slot operations in New York and Pennsylvania.

    The Arizona Department of Gaming reports that contributions based on a gaming revenue formula from the state’s 23 Indian gaming casinos, have been declining every quarter in 2008 compared to the previous year; decreasing .8 percent in the first quarter, 7.5 percent in the second quarter, 9.5 percent in the third quarter, and 16.1 percent in the fourth quarter.

    Some SEC reporting Indian gaming properties report similar decreases. Seneca Gaming, which operates three Class III casinos in upstate New York, reports that while calendar year 2008 showed an almost 2 percent growth rate in gaming revenues, there was an 8.7 percent decline in the third quarter and an almost 10 percent decline in the fourth quarter of 2008, compared with 2007. Gaming revenue trends at nearby Niagara Falls, Ontario were down 1.5% in 2008 compared with 2007.

    It’s been a mixed-bag for state lotteries across the country. The North American Association of State & Provincial Lotteries reports that U.S. lotteries generated a total of $60.6 billion in sales in fiscal 2008, up about 3 percent from the previous year; yet some jurisdictions reported decreases, most notably California, which showed an 8 percent drop. Inasmuch as some of these states are on various fiscal year ends, it would seem that the data does not reflect the impact of third and/or fourth quarter results.
